Hello, I tend to be away from home a fair bit (93 yr old mother physically frail and 95 yr old father in law who is mentally frail, both living by themselves but needing lots of help and of course in completely different places) and am finding it hard to do my bit for their care and be back at home every 4 weeks on the dot to collect my next MTX prescription. Particularly as I'm trying to limit driving backwards & forwards too much as it wipes me out, and costs too much. Do any of you get it for longer than 4 weeks at a time - the pharmacist tells me that 4 weeks is the rule? Thanks, Polly

Hi Polly Sorry to hear of the difficult circumstances with which you are coping at present. Hats off to you for your determination and desire to help your relatives maintain their independence. They rae both doing so well to be in their own homes I am no longer on Methotrexate but was on 15mg until May last year. My repeat prescription was always for 8 weeks and had been so for the nine years I was on it. This may be a local decision as I have heard of limitations before so perhaps a word with your GP and an explanation of your present circumstances may cause him to rethink. Lyn x

Hi Polly , Great that you are caring for your relatives , i tip my hat off to you, must be difficult:( I have only been on MTX for 6 weeks now .. but was given a 3 month supply, so have not had the "repeat " issues yet. However i have heard of someone in a similar situation to yourself , who has managed to get their repeat "away" from home by telephoning their GP's , and i believe it was a large "Boots the Chemist" who assisted her, as i remember However i know my GP does not like the idea of prescribing RA drugs without having access to the latest blood test results (mine are monthly), and this might prove more difficult for you than the prescription issue. I agree with Lyn that you need to speak to your GP about this . Hi Polly, When I first stared on MTX I was give a months supply at a time but the last couple of times I collected my repeat prescription I was given 3 months supply.Don't know if this was a slip up at the chemist but it does make it easier not having to keep going back and forth for a new prescription. Hello Polly
Gosh hats off to you what a very difficult job for you to look after two elderly parents. Well done.
As the others have said make an appointment to see your GP hopefully he will be able to think of an answer for you. It may be that he will arrange for a blood test to be taken at a surgery near your parents ? Perhaps the prescription could be sent to you by recorded delivery. I am sure something can be arranged. I was on mtx but had to come off some time ago now.
Good luck

Hi Polly, When first diagnosed I was given 3 months supply prescribed by the hospital. My GP now only gives me 4 weeks supply which he insists is followed by him checking the results of my blood test. Being a control freak I always ring the surgery for my blood results anyway so I can check them myself and you never know when systems break down. Like this month my GP was away so another GP had to write my prescription which he did before the blood results were back. It seems some GPs are more conscientious than others! But I'm sure there should be some flexibility in your circumstances especially if you keep an eye on your bloods and are tolerating it well I would insist if I were you, its a hasslle you can do without at the minute. Hope that helps and good luck with everything, hope you're managing some down time in amongst all this. Sara x

I'm only ever given a months supply at a time so there seems to be no hard and fast rule about this so hopefully your prescriber can help you with this. YES I'VE CHANGED, PAIN DOES THAT TO PEOPLE.

Hi Polly
I am in awe of you for doing so much to help your elderly relatives. I'm sure they love being in their own homes and very much appreciate all you do for them.
As the others have said - have a word with your GP, explain the circumstances and ask if it's possible to have the dose per prescription doubled or trebled. I have mine on 4 weekly, but this is because I inject and it is delivered, so I don't have the same problem.
Take care of yourself.
Love Jeanx

I've just decamped to holland for three months and had no problem getting three months supply from the gp though usually mine give only one month's supply at a time not just methotrexate but anything. The key factor is that you have your blood tested at whatever interval is necessary for you at this stage of your treatment. If this needs to be done when you are visiting your mum and father in law, and your blood tests results cannot be retrieved by your gp online, you could perhaps reassure him that you will obtain the results and scan these through to him/her for their confirmation that continuation of methotrexate is in order. You are doing amazingly well in attempting all that you are doing and agree with sara that you probably need to insist upon what will help you to a less stressful time of it. .....eve x

When I had mxt tablets they were prescribed by the hospital and they prescribed 12 weeks at a time. They also prescribe sulphazalazine and prescribe 12 weeks worth. However the diclofenac I take is prescribed by GP and they will only prescribe 4 weeks worth.

Hi Polly,
It must be hard for you to fit all this in. I think you should explain your circumstances to your prescriber.
I used to get 3 months from the hospital but only ever 4 weeks since handed over to my GP.
Remember to take care of yourself too!

Thanks all - very useful as I can now ask for a longer prescription with confidence that it's not a national rule and there are exceptions up & down the country. Also thanks for +ve comments re my caring responsibilities and much tho' I'd love to take all the praise I have to admit that it's not just me looking after parents - have a sister & a sister-in-law as well as a few neighbours who pop in - otherwise I think I would be totally overcome by it all. Funny (sort of) thing is that the RA has slowed my walking speed down to such an exent that I'm no longer impatient going out with the elderlies at their snail's pace. A very small compensation for having RA but I guess we have to take what we can get. Polly
